If you haven't seen the movie The Outsiders, I'm telling you now to go and spend the best 13 bucks you've spent in a long time.
I'd be even happier if you read the book.
The reason I love The Outsiders so much is because it is a real depiction of where the world was when I came into being.
The characters are my parents, their friends, and their enemies.
I think where we came from is a big deal.
I came from a libido-charged decision at a rock show.
But I also came from a young love. And I came from two kids who turned into adults over night.
I have always known my story.
I have always know that my mom was 17 when I was born.
I have always know that my parents didn't get married until I was 2 months along in development.
I know all of this because my parents are not ashamed of their story.
My parents are not exactly Ponyboy Curtis and Cherry Valance of The Outsiders, but they are the theme of the movie.
"Stay Gold."
They have stayed gold and young and real.
Their lives have not rusted, even though rain has pounded on the steel of their success.
I came from Ponyboy and Cherry.
I came from an overplayed Bryan Adams song on the radio.
I came from acid-washed jeans unzipped and leather jackets tossed onto the record player.
I came from reruns of Growing Pains.
I came from 1988.
And I came from the Only One who can make a baby.
So I guess that makes me somewhat of an outsider too.
