"Having a beautiful mother is like having a famous mother. If you're going to survive, you have to make your own way."
I read that quote in Vogue. I can't remember who wrote the article, but it was great, and one of the few times I actually related to that magazine. haha.
My mother, for most of my life, has always been on the attractive side.
I remember when I was in Kindergarten. I was on the bus, and the bus was pulling up to the stop. My mom was waiting for me there in the car.
My friend named Emily said "is that your big sister?"
and I said "no, that's my mom."
And Emily said "tell her I think she's very pretty."
I don't know why, but I never forgot that day. I told my mom as soon as I got in the car. I don't remember how she took the compliment, but I do remember that I began taking a lot of pride in my mom's looks.
I was in Kindergarten, so she was around 22. And so she was stunning at that age, as most of us are. (Maybe myself excluded, though I have a couple years before I am 22, so I'll let you know. Maybe in 2 years my body will adhere to the dietary torture I've been putting it through and I too will be a hot mom.)
But the thing is, my mom's youth has always set her apart from all the other moms. And my mom's beauty has, I think, given people an excuse to like me.
I don't mean to sound like a martyr, but it's true. I see it with my brother too.
In any other case, I would not be liked by certain peers if I was not associated with my mom or my brother or my hot friends, hot sister, etc.
Something about being associated with someone beautiful gives you a consolation card.
I've always been captivated by beauty. Now that I am older, I constantly analyze how much better off good-looking people are. We try and look for exceptions, but we can't deny the majorities.
My roommate is a cosmetoligist and her goal is to "rid the world of what we call beauty." I love her perspective and how she sees things.
I guess my (lifelong) rhetorical questions are--how universal is beauty? I mean, do certain rules always apply? (young and thin seem to be the main ones)
What is it about physical appeal that is so...well...appealing?
Why did God give us the ability to discern who is pretty?
Or did we, over time, warp what "pretty" is?
One of my major novel ideas (still working on it, it'll be a LONG time) has a theme of beauty and how it helps (or hinders) people in life. Any comments/imput would greatly improve my story!
